1800 Gold Rush

In the 1800s gold mining gave birth to Independence, Colorado on July 4, 1891 when Winfield Scott Stratton struck it rich in the Cripple Creek Mining District. Now, over 100 years later, gold mining is destroying the ghost town of Independence.

Gold mining was shut down entirely during World War II because it was deemed non essential to the war effort. All mines closed in the Cripple Creek Mining District by 1961.
